John 10: 22-30 - 'The Father and I are one.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:
- 548 (in 'The Signs of the Kingdom of God') - The signs worked by Jesus attest that the Father has sent him. They invite belief in him. To those who turn to him in faith, he grants what they ask. So miracles strengthen faith in the One who does his Father's works; they bear witness that he is the Son of God (abbreviated).
- 583 (in 'Jesus and the Temple') - His public ministry itself was patterned by his pilgrimages to Jerusalem for the great Jewish Feasts (abbreviated).
- 590 (in 'Jesus and Israel's faith in the One God and Saviour') - Only the divine identity of Jesus' person can justify so absolute a claim as "He who is not with me is against me"; and his saying that there was in him "something greater than Jonah,. . . greater than Solomon", something "greater than the Temple"; his reminder that David had called the Messiah his Lord, and his affirmations, "Before Abraham was, I AM", and even "I and the Father are one."

0:00.0 | Hi everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Gospel Exegesis, which is a production of logical Bible study ministry. In this podcast, we look at the gospel reading for the day's mass, |
0:24.1 | and we really pull it apart. |
0:25.4 | We try to get to the literal sense of the text, |
0:29.1 | which is where we need to start, according to the teaching of the Catholic Church. |
0:32.7 | It's very hard to understand the Bible |
0:34.3 | and what it's trying to say to us if we don't start with the literal sense. |
0:38.7 | So this is the only podcast out there that goes through the gospel readings in an analytical |
0:44.0 | way every single day. So I hope you're enjoying going through things in the way that we do them. |
0:50.4 | Today we're looking at John chapter 10 versus 22 to 30. It was the time when the feast of |
0:58.5 | dedication was being celebrated in Jerusalem. It was winter and Jesus was in the temple |
1:04.1 | walking up and down in the portico of Solomon. The Jews gathered around him and said, |
1:13.1 | How much longer are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus replied, I have told you, but you do not |
1:21.6 | believe. The works I do in my father's name are my witness, but you do not believe, because you are no sheep of mine. |
1:30.4 | The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them |
1:37.4 | eternal life. They will never be lost. And no one will ever steal them from me. The father who gave them to me is greater than anyone, and no one will ever steal them from me. |
1:47.1 | The father who gave them to me is greater than anyone, |
1:49.7 | and no one can steal from the father. |
1:52.2 | The father and I are one. |
1:57.0 | So the context here is important. |
2:00.8 | The last time we saw Jesus in John, at the start of John chapter 10, he speaks the |
2:04.0 | parable of the good shepherd. And that's covered, you'll hear that parable on the fourth Sunday of |
2:10.0 | Easter in year B or the Monday of the fourth week of Easter in year A. So you can go back and |
