Luke 7: 11-17 - 'The only son of his mother, and she a widow.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 994 (in 'The Progressive revelation of the Resurrection') - Already now in this present life he gives a sign and pledge of this by restoring some of the dead to life, announcing thereby his own Resurrection, though it was to be of another order (abbreviated).

- 1503 (in 'Christ the Physician') - Christ's compassion toward the sick and his many healings of every kind of infirmity are a resplendent sign that "God has visited his people" and that the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Jesus has the power not only to heal, but also to forgive sins; he has come to heal the whole man, soul and body; he is the physician the sick have need of. His compassion toward all who suffer goes so far that he identifies himself with them: "I was sick and you visited me." His preferential love for the sick has not ceased through the centuries to draw the very special attention of Christians toward all those who suffer in body and soul. It is the source of tireless efforts to comfort them.

Hi everyone. Welcome back to the podcast where we do an in-depth look at the gospel reading from

0:16.7

today's mass. We're all about helping you understand the literal sense of the text.

0:22.5

Today we're looking at a story that you only get in the Gospel of Luke. None of the other

0:27.2

gospels recall this one. So we're looking at Luke chapter 7 verses 11 to 17. Jesus went to a town

0:35.7

called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people.

0:40.3

When he was near the gate of the town, it happened that a dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow.

0:50.3

And a considerable number of the townspeople were with her. When the Lord saw her, he felt

0:56.9

sorry for her. Do not cry, he said. Then he went up and put his hand on the beer, and the bearers

1:04.9

stood still, and he said, young man, I tell you to get up. And the dead man sat up and began to talk and Jesus gave him to his mother

1:16.6

everyone was filled with awe and praised God saying a great prophet has appeared among us

1:23.6

God has visited his people and this opinion of him spread throughout Judea and all over the

1:30.7

countryside. So that's our story for today. It's one of the more interesting miracles of Jesus.

1:36.6

So as I said, this is only found in the Gospel of Luke. Let's start by thinking about the context.

1:42.1

So just before this, Jesus has healed the centurion

1:45.2

servant in Copernum. You might have heard that in yesterday's reading. And now we get to verse 11.

1:51.2

Most translations have at this point in verse 11, it says soon afterward, or other translations

1:57.7

might say the next day. So apparently straight after he did the previous

2:02.4

healing of the centurion servant, he now travels to Nain. So that will be a 25 mile journey

2:09.3

on foot to Nane. And apparently he gets there by the next day or certainly in the next couple

2:13.6

of days. So Jesus went to a town called Nain. Nain is a small village in Galilee,

2:20.5

about six miles northeast of Nazareth. So Jesus has probably gone there before in his life

2:26.7

because it's near Nazareth, but this is the only time it's mentioned in the Bible. None of the
