Matthew 11: 20-24 - 'It will not go as hard with Sodom on Judgement Day as with you.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 678 (in 'To Judge the Living and the Dead') - Following in the steps of the prophets and John the Baptist, Jesus announced the judgement of the Last Day in his preaching. Then will the conduct of each one and the secrets of hearts be brought to light. Then will the culpable unbelief that counted the offer of God's grace as nothing be condemned. Our attitude to our neighbour will disclose acceptance or refusal of grace and divine love (abbreviated).

Hi everyone. Welcome back to Logical Bible Study, the podcast, which is all about doing a really solid Catholic exegesis of the text of Scripture.

0:22.0

And we're looking at today's gospel that you would hear if you went to Mass.

0:26.3

And today's gospel is Matthew chapter 11 verses 20 to 24.

0:33.5

Jesus began to reproach the towns in which most of his miracles had been worked because they

0:40.5

refused to repent. Alas for you, Charazan, alas for you, Bethsaida, for if the miracles done in you

0:48.9

had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

0:55.5

And still, I tell you that it will not go as hard on judgment day with tyre and siden as with you.

1:03.5

And as for you, Copernum, did you want to be exalted as high as heaven?

1:08.8

You should be thrown down to hell.

1:13.2

For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been standing yet. And still, I tell you that it will not go

1:20.5

as hard with the land of Sodom on Judgment Day as with you.

1:33.5

Okay, so today's passage is a little bit hard to interpret in some ways, and the main reason for that is because it's not clear to the extent at which Jesus is using hyperbole, to what

1:39.4

extent is he exaggerating to make a point?

1:41.8

And we know that Jesus does do that.

1:44.1

For example, in the Sermon on the Mount, he says, do not let your right hand know Is he exaggerating to make a point? And we know that Jesus does do that.

1:44.1

For example, in the sermon on the mount, he says, do not let your right hand know what

1:48.5

your left hand is doing.

1:50.4

Well, that's physically impossible, so that has to be an exaggeration.

1:54.7

So is Jesus using exaggeration here?

1:57.0

That's one of the big interpretive questions.

1:59.3

And if you look at the scholarly literature on this particular passage, that's what you'll find.

2:04.8

Scholars are divided about how literal Jesus is being.
