0:15.0	He in this case means California Governor Gavin Newsom, and what he did was appoint an
0:19.6	acting senator to serve the remainder of the term of the late Senator Diane Feinstein.
0:25.6	We discussed the death of Diane Feinstein, and it's meaning yesterday, and one of the
0:29.7	big open questions is what the governor of California would do.
0:33.8	He had stated, after the last time he bated interim appointment, that this time he would
0:39.0	appoint a black woman.
0:40.2	The reason he had to say that is because he came under incredible political pressure
0:44.5	for naming Alex Padilla as an acting senator, and in that case, it was an Hispanic man,
0:52.6	but it was a man.
0:54.6	And in today's context of intersectionality, that's not enough, even an Hispanic man.
1:01.4	So let's just look at what we actually have here.
1:03.8	We have a new senator who, by the way, is not now living in California.
1:08.9	The new California senator also has not been voting in California recently, but she is
1:14.6	nonetheless a big power in democratic politics.
1:17.6	She has been the president of Emily's List.
1:19.9	Her name is Lafonda Butler, and Emily's List is an organization that has been all
1:24.6	about serving candidates and funding candidates, democratic candidates who are pro-abortion in
1:31.4	terms of election cycles.
