Today, fresh fears of a Chinese slowdown cause a sell-off on Wall Street, the White House says

Ivanka Trump will help find the new World Bank president, and finally it

looks like today's the day. We'll see whether or not Theresa May's Brexit deal survives in the House of Commons.

Then the FT's Sujit Indap on the latest hedge fund deal to buy into local news.

This is Peter Wells on the Fast F.T. News desk in New York.

We are talking about the market's decline today with the S&P 500 closing about half

percentage point lower.

This all began in Asia following economic data showing that China's exports in December had fallen by the most in about two years.

Now against the backdrop of the US-China trade war that didn't go down particularly well with investors.

Asian markets outside Japan sold off and that rolled through to New York today where we had the market.

Finishing lower for its first back-to-back decline since December 24.

That runs counter to a lot of the optimism we saw last week when trade talks between the

US and China were happening in Beijing and we had a relatively

sort of positive dialogue coming out from that. Investors were sort of hoping for the best.

So the actual data that's coming out and showing that the trade war has actually been biting on the Chinese

economy was not taken particularly kindly by investors today.
