| 0:13.6 | If you're looking at earthquakes, one of the most terrifying experiences known to humanity |
| 0:17.8 | and one of the most destructive, both of human life and of civilization, it is hard to |
| 0:22.6 | imagine a region of the world more affected and more vulnerable when it comes to earthquakes. |
| 0:28.6 | And of course, we're talking about the massive earthquake that took place over the course |
| 0:31.9 | of the last couple of days and in particular, Sunday night and Monday, in the area that |
| 0:38.1 | included Eastern Turkey and Northwestern Syria. |
| 0:42.7 | And we're talking about a death toll that right now is estimated at something like 5,000 |
| 0:46.8 | human beings with the World Health Organization indicating that the likelihood is that there |
| 0:51.4 | will be something like 20,000 deaths. |
| 0:54.6 | Now this is a horrifying news story. |
| 0:56.8 | We're talking about thousands upon thousands of human beings. |
| 0:59.7 | We're also talking about a very complex situation. |
| 1:03.4 | Now as you're thinking about this region of the world, just recognize this has been a |
| 1:07.6 | part of various empires throughout the history of the world. |
| 1:11.6 | And it has also been throughout all of recorded history going back to the classical age. |
| 1:17.4 | It has been one of the regions of the world most affected by deadly earthquakes. |
| 1:22.6 | We also need to understand something else. |
| 1:25.1 | And that is the fact that a response to this has a lot to do with the civilizational |
| 1:29.6 | health and the culture of the region. |
