I'm Patricia Murphy with a roundup of today's

top stories. It's Tuesday, April 1st. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson is telling lawmakers to make big

changes to their budget plans. Olympia correspondent Jeannie Lindsay reports Ferguson said today

that the tax proposals from Democrats in the legislature go too far.

House and Senate Democrats want to create a major new wealth tax to help balance the state budget.

But Governor Ferguson says he'll veto a budget that relies on a wealth tax.

We cannot adopt a budget with anywhere near the level of taxes currently proposed by

the House and Senate. Ferguson calls the wealth tax idea untested and worries it could be overturned by a

court. The governor says it's especially worrying as the state faces unpredictability at the federal

level with looming funding cuts and tariffs.

He added that if lawmakers want to finish this legislative session on time,

they need to change course on their tax plans.

They have four weeks left.
