Hey there from the KUOW Newsroom. This is Seattle Now. I'm Patricia Murphy. Here are today's top stories.

It's Tuesday, October 22nd. The 15-year-old suspected of killing three teens and two adults and injuring a child near Fall City had his first hearing in King County Superior Court this afternoon. And

1:12.1

Dornfeld has more. The teen chose not to appear at his first appearance hearing due to the media

1:17.1

presence, his defense attorney said. Prosecutors said they have probable cause to charge the boy with

1:22.3

five counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. Judge Joe Campania said the

1:28.1

official charges are due Thursday, including whether prosecutors will seek to try the 15-year-old as an

1:33.3

adult. The allegations which, of course, haven't been filed yet nor proven are of the gravest possible

1:40.5

seriousness. Defense attorneys did not argue for the boys' release from juvenile detention, but stressed his youth and said he enjoys mountain biking and fishing. Judge Campania granted the defense request barring the media from identifying the teen, given his age. It is rare for 15-year-olds to be tried as adults in King County. Ann Dornfeld, KUOW News.

Starbucks released their latest earnings report today. The news was not good. The Seattle-based coffee giant says

2:18.7

global sales declined 7%, primarily driven by stores in North America. CEO Brian Nicol addressed

2:25.8

the challenges in a video statement. People love Starbucks, but I've heard from some customers

2:31.0

that we've drifted from our core, that we've made it harder to be

2:34.1

a customer than it should be, and that we've stopped communicating with them. As a result,

2:38.9

some are visiting less often. And I think today's results tell that same story.

2:43.4

Nichols says the company needs a shift in strategy, which includes taking Starbucks back to being

2:48.4

a welcoming coffee house where people gather.
