It was rumored and it has happened. The second seismic act of consolidation in the chip space in the last six

months is here. A. M.D. says it is buying rival chipmaker Xylinx for 3535 billion in an all-stock deal.

Quoting Semiconductor guru Patrick Morehead in Forbes,

quote,

Amd and Zylink have hugely different product portfolios

and are focused on different markets with a few exceptions.

This is a good thing when it comes to acquisitions and I believe the two companies are complementary.

AMD is focused on high performance CPU and GPS and gpus for PCs and data center servers

and systems on a chip for game consoles and notebooks.

Xylinx is focused on high-performance FPGAs,

systems on a chip for data centers, including smart

NICs, communications, automotive, industrial, aerospace, and defense markets.

Short term, I can see go-to-market synergies.
