Here are some of the cool things from the news today.

0:40.3

It's World Ocean Day, and National Geographic is celebrating by announcing a new ocean, kind of.

0:48.3

So growing up, you were probably taught that there are four oceans, the Pacific, the Indian, the Atlantic, and the Arctic.

But if you work in certain scientific fields, or perhaps depending on where you were educated,

1:01.1

you know that there's a fifth, the Southern Ocean. The International Hydrographic Organization,

1:07.2

or IHO, has been responsible for naming and delineating seas and oceans since

The Antarctic or Southern Ocean has been omitted from this publication as the majority of opinions

1:41.7

no real justification for applying the term ocean to this body of water,

1:46.9

the northern limits of which are difficult to lay down owing to their seasonal change.

1:57.9

Hydrographic offices who issue separate publications dealing with this area are

2:01.7

therefore left to decide their own northern limits, end quote. Though the matter has been

2:07.4

revisited a number of times most significantly in the year 2000, the IHO has yet to come to an

agreement from its members, and the Southern Ocean has not been formally reinstated by the IHO.
