July 19, 1989 United Airlines Flight 232, a McDonald Douglas DC-10, is on a regularly

schedule flight from Denver to Chicago. The plane is piloted by Captain Alfred Haines

with first officer William Records and flight engineer Dudley Devorek. The flight

took off at 209 pm with 285 passengers and 11 crew members. At 316 pm while at

cruising altitude and executing a shallow right turn, the crew feels a jolt and

the autopilot disengages. The crew quickly realizes the plane has not only lost

an engine but has also lost all of its hydraulic fluid and is no longer

responding to their attempts to control it. The crew contacts maintenance personnel

for advice and are told that controlling the plane is virtually impossible and

there are no procedures for the situation they find themselves in. What happened
