Summary

Weekend Scripture: John 8

It is possible to have Jesus right in front of you and miss Him because of lies.

This week, Scott jumped back into John 8 as we finished up our series on Truth. Jesus has made it clear that we have a big problem: our slavery to sin. But the good news is that He has come to set us free. Who do you know that needs to know Jesus?

talking demonstration of what it looks like to be right in the center in bull's eye of God's will.

When he talks about what pure worship

0:22.5

looks like, looking after orphans is the bullseye. And so many of you right now, your heart and

Our key word again today is truth. And we're going to pick up right back where we left off in John chapter 8. But we got to get a little bit of a running start on this one. All right. So if you remember, Jesus is in the temple and he's got kind of two groups of people.

1:12.3

He's got those who are leaning in to him and believing in him and trusting in him. Those are just

1:17.9

a regular old folks. And then there's the religious folks that are out to get him. And the mere

1:22.2

suggestion to these religious folks that they had once been enslaved at all just totally triggers them in the midst of

1:29.4

their fragility they get all up in their feelings and they're like hey we haven't we never been

1:33.4

slaves to anyone minimizing and missing the fact that the central point of their heritage was that

1:39.0

they had in fact been slaves in Egypt for 400 years they've been taken in captivity time and time

1:44.1

again enslaved by foreign powers.

1:46.1

And at that very moment, we're living under the rule and reign of the Roman Empire. So yes, they had in fact

1:51.9

been slaves. And then Jesus delivered this message to all of us that we are when we're not with him,

1:56.5

when we're not in him, we are in fact slaves to sin. So Jesus is just kind of all up in their face

2:02.8

with this truth. And this conversation continues today. We pick it up in verse 37. It says this,

2:08.8

I know that you are offspring of Abraham, but here's the problem. Y'all are seeking to kill me

2:13.4

because my word finds no place in you. I speak of what I've seen with my father, and I want you to underline father, and notice that's a capital F, and you do what you've heard from your father. Underline that, notice that's a lowercase F. We'll get to that in a little bit, and they answered him, Abraham is our father. Now, quick show of hands. How many of y'all grew up going to church? Maybe you went to Sunday school show hands. How many of you? How many of you served in kids ministry over the years? Something like that. If that's the case, you might have familiarity with a song and it's going off in your mind and your heart right now. And it's called Father Abraham, all right? And some of you all know what I'm talking about. It goes like this. Father Abraham, had many sons sing it with me.
