Congress is set to leave Washington today for a week-long recess, even as major fights over

President Trump's priorities are left unresolved, and many lawmakers are left fuming. Of course,

divisions between Democrats and Republicans are nothing new, but right now there are

also growing tensions between the White House and members of President Trump's own party. On the Senate side of

the Capitol, there was reportedly a highly contentious meeting yesterday between GOP senators and

acting attorney general Todd Blanche. And after that meeting, Republicans scrapped plans for an

immediate vote on a roughly $72 billion

bill to fund immigration enforcement agencies. One major sticking point was the Trump administration's

new fund for people who claim they've been politically persecuted. The White House has defended that

program as compensation for people, it says, were treated unfairly by the justice system.

But the plan is drawing pushback from both parties, including some top Republicans.

Even before that, GOP lawmakers split with Trump and removed another part of the bill

that would have given a billion dollars for projects at the White House complex, including

the president's proposed ballroom.
