Summary

We take stock of the latest developments in Washington as the heat intensifies on Trump and the leaking war continues. What do the new revelations tell us about Trump's fitness to be president? What do they tell us about the power struggles inside the administration? We also take a step back to ask about the risks of any showdown between an elected president and the secret state. Might Trump's fate set a precedent for any outsider who takes on the political establishment? Do the Democrats need to be careful what they wish for? Plus, in the week the UK parties start publishing their election manifestos, we ask: what's a manifesto worth anyway? With Helen Thompson, Aaron Rapport and Chris Bickerton.

Hello my name is David Ronson and this is Talking Politics.

0:07.0

I'm joined this week by Helen Thompson, Aaron Rapport and Chris Bickerson. Last week we

0:16.4

held off talking about Trump and Komi because we thought we would let the story just mature

0:21.6

a bit and it has matured over the last week and last night the latest twist is that there's

0:27.2

a memo from James Komi which seems to suggest that the president asked him to back off the

0:34.6

Flynn investigation and that's provoked the latest round of depending on your perspective

0:40.2

hysterical or measured and well-reasoned commentary suggesting that this presidency is in deep

0:47.3

trouble. Some of you may have seen things and maybe I've missed them but I've been looking

0:52.3

for what you might call impartial commentary on this that is not people who just have got

0:59.7

nothing to say but people whose views are not predictable by where they stood beforehand.

1:05.6

I haven't found a Trump supporter who now says this presidency is done but they may be

1:11.5

out there. I mean I know some Republican senators are starting to get twitchy but that's

1:15.2

different. I've not found an anti-Trump or never Trump are saying get over it guys there's

1:20.0

nothing to see here. Everyone seems to more or less take the position you expect them to take

1:25.1

so it's quite hard to know what to think I'm finding and so we're going to talk about that.

1:30.6

We've been frantically looking how to pronounce his name so we think it's Ross Goudet.

1:36.7

Goudet. The New York Times thanks Aaron. The New York Times columnist he's there sort of in-house

1:42.8

Republican but he was pretty skeptical about Trump and this morning he's saying forget impeachment

1:49.0

it's now about incapacity and pence and others you need to think about removing him but that's not

1:54.7

someone who thought he was capable and now thinks he's incapable. So before we get into the

2:00.4

detail of who said what to whom and we may never get to that because we don't know frankly

2:04.9

can we look at it from the other end of the telescope I'm interested in not so much what this says
