Summary

Today, the clash between Governor Newsom and President Trump escalates as LA protests enter day four.

A defence official has told the BBC's US partner CBS that approximately 2,100 members of the California National Guard are now on location in the greater Los Angeles area, with 700 Marines also in and around the city. Newsom called it “the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial president,” while Trump claimed LA “would be burning to the ground” without his intervention. Adam is joined by chief anchor for BBC News Sumi Somaskanda, and host of the Coming Storm Gabriel Gatehouse.

And, the prime minister has said he is "not writing a blank cheque" to pay for a new UK nuclear power plant, after the government announced it would commit £14.2bn to the project. Sir Keir Starmer told the BBC the development of Sizewell C on the Suffolk coastline would create 10,000 jobs over the next decade, and provide energy security and independence for the country. Adam is joined by Adam Bell, the former head of energy strategy at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

0:39.3	implications in black and white of the government's decision to spend more in defence. So that
0:44.7	will actually be spelt out much more clearly what the consequences of that are. Number two,
0:49.5	the government's current priorities will be revealed and they may be different from what the government's
0:56.0	priorities were before and the priorities that got Kirstarmer elected in the first place. Number three,
1:01.6	because this is a so-called zero-based review where the government has looked at everything it spends
1:06.4	money on, they will stop spending money on certain things. And those might be things that are popular
1:11.9	with some groups of people. Number four, because there will be winners and losers around the
1:17.5	cabinet table, that sets up some potential new internal opposition to Kirstarmer and Rachel Reeves.
1:25.0	Number five, this will be a point for Labour MPs to realize the actual
1:30.8	real world consequences of Rachel Reeves fiscal rules on her limits on borrowing. And they might not
1:37.8	like that reality. Number six, the think tanks like the Institute for Fiscal Studies, the
1:43.8	economists and the opposition parties
1:46.0	will probably look at Rachel Reeves's numbers and say that she's being a bit naive or a bit
1:51.9	optimistic about the economy or what the government's going to have to do in 2027 and then
