Summary

On Monday, President Donald Trump announced two measures aimed at pressuring Russia to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. First, Trump said Russia would face tariffs “at about 100%” if it did not agree to a peace deal in the next 50 days, adding that he would impose secondary sanctions on countries that buy Russian oil, such as China, India, Brazil, and Turkey. Second, he outlined a plan for countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to purchase weapons from the United States and then transfer them to Ukraine. The announcement follows recently heightened criticism from President Trump towards Russian President Vladimir Putin over his purported unwillingness to end the war.
