One of the strongest Category 5 hurricanes on record. Hurricane Melissa slammed into Jamaica on Tuesday as a category 4, with winds topping 185 miles per hour.

As of this moment, most communications with the island is down, but a ray of sunshine, Jamaica's capital, Kingston seems to have been spared

to the brunt of the storm. Its airport could be opened by Thursday for disaster relief to be

flown in. Melissa hit Jamaica at around 5 p.m. Tuesday night and quickly degraded to a category

four. Prime Minister Andrew Holness has declared the country a disaster area. The New York

Times reporting 75 patients inside Jamaica's Black River Hospital had to be evacuated. 500,000

hate people in Jamaica are now without power. The storm smacked into Cuba early Wednesday as a

category three.

750,000 people on that island were evacuated.

The BBC reporting that the frequency of hurricanes this century is no different than the previous century.

But the average intensity of hurricanes now has increased.

The average hurricane now is a three, category three.

According to the BBC, hurricanes now move slower.

This is due to warmer oceans, sending up more evaporation into the clouds, making those clouds heavier.

They turn into hurricanes, which becomes slower because they're heavier,

and they pack more moisture when they hit landfall.

Remember, warmer water causes hurricanes to become massive.

The burning of fossil fuels traps the greenhouse gases, which raises the temperatures of our oceans. So our
