In office, US President Donald Trump has shown little empathy for Africa.

He's promoted unsubstantiated claims of white genocide in South Africa.

Seven of the 12 countries whose citizens are banned from visiting the United States are African.

But his remarks about Somalis living in the US,

the majority of whom were born in America, suggested not just lack of empathy, but outright hostility.

I don't want them in our country, I'll be honest with you. Somebody would say, oh, that's not politically

correct. I don't care. I don't want them in our country. Their country is no good for a reason.

Their country stinks, and we don't want them in our country. I could say that about other countries too.

I can say it about other countries too. We don't want them to help. We have to rebuild our country.

You know, our country's at a tipping point. We could go bad. We're at a tipping point. I don't

know if people mind me saying that, but I'm saying that we could go one way or the other,

and we're going to go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country.

Last year, 260,000 people of Somali descent were living in America.

The largest community, 84,000, is in the twin cities of

Minneapolis-St. Paul in Minnesota. Of those people, 58% are US citizens by birth.

87% of the Minnesotan community, who weren't born in America, are now naturalised Americans.

The mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, condemned the president's words,

but his bigger concern, he said,
