A man in a black hat steps out of the saloon into the blinding sun.

His spurs, sharp as razor yet rusty, unseemly, kick up spurts of dust as he walks.

He is a mustache, but also three-day beard growth, which seems an affront to basic human decency under the circumstances.

Can't this man even shave? He's about to gun someone down in a gun fight.

Seems right and honorable to be clean-shaven before you take another man's life.

You'd shave before you go to a wedding,

or you should shave before you put a man in a funeral.

But then, that man, that man,

wears a black hat.

We turn and we see the silhouette of another man. We can't see that man yet because the blinding sun is behind him.

He's some kind of Western Apollo standing before us, arms akimbo, tall, confident.

And now that our eyes have adjusted, by God, he's clean-shaven.

Clean-shaven.

White, blonde.

Sort of guy who probably has a decent credit rating.

And he's got a white hat.

And this way of thinking of black hats and white hats when it comes to politics is mostly stupid.
