Summary

Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour Host Scot Bertram fills in for Jim on 3 Martini Lunch. Join Scot and Greg as they break down President Trump’s latest tariff moves, the surprisingly cordial exchange between Trump and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and the alarming surge of fake college students defrauding taxpayers.

First, they analyze President Trump’s announcement that he will pause most of the tariffs announced last week for the next 90 days, while sharply increasing tariffs on China. Other nations will see a temporary reduction to 10 percent. Greg points to the value of singling out China economically, while Scot highlights how Trump’s approach reflects two consistent patterns in his approach to leadership.

Next, they react to Trump’s unexpected praise for Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, calling her “a very good person” and saying she’s done “an excellent job.” While many conservatives in Michigan strongly disagree, Whitmer echoed support for reshoring manufacturing and expressed understanding of Trump’s tariff policy. Scot and Greg explore what’s behind this odd development and how it could impact Whitmer’s likely 2028 presidential run and more.

Finally, they expose how scammers are siphoning off millions in taxpayer-funded financial aid by enrolling fake students in California’s community college system. Estimates show up to 34 percent of community college applicants in the state may have fraudulent in the most recent statistics. But Scot reveals how the colleges are also bending over backwards trying not to remove these fake students.

Jim Garrity is away.

Here in his place is Scott Bertram.

He's the general manager of WRFH Radio Free Hillsdale, 101.7 FM on the campus of Hillsdale College. He's also host of the Radio Free Hillsdale Hour and a bunch of other excellent podcasts, including Wasn't That Special, 50 Years of Saturday Night Live. Scott, great to have you with us again. Greg, glad to be here. Thank you. Well, let's start with the big story. That's the one that we got

0:41.8

after we finished recording yesterday. And that's Trump's decision on the tariffs. He announced

0:49.6

them on April 2nd. And on April 9th, he backed down to some extent on most countries with a very

0:56.7

significant exception of China. So yesterday, the president sends out on social media,

1:01.8

based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the world markets, I am hereby raising

1:06.5

the tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125% effective immediately.

1:12.1

At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping

1:15.5

off the USA and other countries is no longer sustainable or acceptable.

1:20.1

Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 countries have called representatives of the

1:24.8

United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury,

1:28.1

and the U.S. Trade Representative to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative

1:32.2

to trade, trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs,

1:37.5

and that these countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape,

1:41.6

or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90-day pause

1:45.9

and a substantially lowered reciprocal tariff during this period of 10% also effective immediately.

Wall Street loved that yesterday.
