During the height of the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Union were locked in a nuclear

arms race that threatened the survival of the planet.

That threat appears to have receded in recent years, but a groundbreaking new report by

Yahoo News this week is a powerful reminder that we are now locked in an escalating cyber

war with our adversaries in which crippling hacks and covert influence operations are

increasingly becoming the norm, all conducted in the shadows.

The Yahoo News exclusive disclosed that President Trump in 2018 signed a secret finding authorizing

the CIA to launch offensive cyber operations on its own, with no White House approval,

including attacks aimed at disrupting the civil and political institutions of countries

like Iran and Russia, precisely the sort of operation the Russians unleashed on us during

the 2016 election.
