Summary

Joy Reid leads this episode of The ReidOut with breaking news. Donald Trump's former vice president Mike Pence has been subpoenaed by special counsel Jack Smith, a source familiar with the matter tells NBC News. Smith is overseeing the dual probes involving Pence's former boss, regarding the classified documents Trump took with him to Mar-a-Lago and the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. MSNBC's Ari Melber joins Joy with his analysis. Plus, today was the first hearing of House Republicans' new select subcommittee on "weaponization" of the federal government, which many consider to be a decidedly unserious effort to fan the flames of conspiracies about a "deep state" and right wing persecution complexes. Joy and her panel discuss. NBC News correspondent Antonia Hylton, who is just back from Memphis, where she has been reporting on the beating death of Tyre Nichols, also joins us with the latest revelations regarding the alleged police involvement in this crime. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

but when a former vice president of the United States is subpoenaed, it is a big deal. According

0:35.6

to ABC News, which was the first to report this news, it follows months of negotiations

between federal prosecutors and Pence's legal team. Not surprising, but spokespeople for

deal. But it is not a specifically big deal because we don't know exactly what these probes

1:05.8

1:11.3

Number one, it means a special counsel, Jack Smith, is going up the line. This is very

1:15.8

near the top vice president. We all know. Number two, after that, you have Donald Trump,

1:21.0

the former president. So they're going up the line and get this information. Number one,

1:24.6

number two, it means that if whatever reason they've determined that they're not getting

1:27.8

it easily voluntarily. Now that doesn't mean anything bad per se. It means either they

1:34.3

have a witness who doesn't want to testify in Mike Pence or they have Mike Pence as

1:38.1

lawyers saying, this is a tough one. Yeah. If it comes out that there's a subpoena, it

1:42.6

would make it easier for them. It could be a strategy. And number three, then New York
