And what a finale it's turned out to be, Donald Trump has achieved a clean sweep of the

battleground states, Republicans have regained control of the Senate, and they're on course

to hold the House of Representatives. And here was Kamala Harris, conceding in Washington, D.C. on

Wednesday. Hear me when I say, the light of America's promise will always burn bright.

As long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting. It was not the speech she hoped to give,

and even on election night, as I spoke to friends and foes of the Harris camp, it looked like

they still thought there was a path to the White House for her through the blue states. But as

the results poured in, it was not to be.

Harris had been overestimated in many polls and she lost handily to Donald Trump.

After a dramatic night of reporting here at Politico's Washington HQ,

we're rolling out the big guns to unpick the result and explore what happens next.
