Even before the Helsinki meeting of President Trump and Putin, David Korn of Mother Jones

had a warning. Much of the political and media elite and the citizenry he wrote seemed to be

sleepwalking past a horrific and fundamental fact. The current president

of the United States has helped to cover up a serious attack on the nation. We'll talk with David

Korn in a moment. But how could such a historically unprecedented scenario be anything but a

kook theory? Jonathan Chate asked that question in New York Magazine, also

before the two presidents met and held their news conference in Helsinki. Chate pointed out

that the case against Trump, if there is one, has been delivered in scoop after scoop of discrete

nuggets of information. It's been disorienting and difficult to follow. What would it look like,

he asked, if it were reassembled into a single narrative? Jonathan, Chade, welcome.

Thank you so much for having you. A single narrative, but not necessarily a simple narrative.

You go all the way back to 1987. I do, and this is admittedly the most unlikely part of the story, but it's also a significant

one that I think has received far too little attention.

People say that Donald Trump has had certain beliefs about the international system forever

or for 30 years. And sometimes

that's a way of explaining his behavior is having nothing to do with Russia. It's just what

he believes. But one of the things I wanted to point out here is it's only something he believes

publicly since he went to Russia in 1987. It's pretty well established that Russia was courting him that he visited Moscow,

discussed building something in Moscow, didn't.
