Welcome to the beat. I am Ari Melbert. President Trump is facing a new kind of trouble and setback

on a signature issue. The tariff agenda, the trade war, is now officially in jeopardy because Donald

Trump again finds he may be trying to wield powers he does not have. Basically, today is very different

from yesterday and the months of tariff

haggling because Trump's trade war, which rests on his ability to unilaterally impose these

tariffs now hangs by what may be a thin legal threat. The man who helped bankroll his campaign is

also now completely out. Elon Musk, who was demoted, is now pretty much gone, and

in an almost emotional, maudlin way, seems to be reflecting on what didn't work, which is a form of

him rarely acknowledging failure, as he criticizes aspects of the Trump agenda. These are two big

stories. So I'll tell you straight up,

we're going to get to Musk in a little bit. We begin right now with the setback for Trump's tariffs.

A powerful federal court has ruled today, basically as of today, from this late-breaking ruling,

that Trump may not have this power. Now, I'm going to get into the details of this because there are some nuances when you're talking about unwinding an international

trade war. But the core ruling is that Trump's acts were illegal, that he doesn't have the

authority he claimed to impose many of these tariffs. Now, that's a big setback, but the implication

of whether this ruling is carried out will take some time.
