President Biden unveiled a tranche of more than 500 new sanctions against Vladimir Putin's Russia after the death of

Putin's chief political opponent Alexei Navalny.

Alexei Navalny died as a political prisoner in Russia and US officials have blamed Vladimir Putin for that,

repeatedly.

Make no mistake, Putin is responsible for Alex's death.

This would be a further sign of Putin's brutality.

Whatever story they tell, let us be clear, Russia is responsible.

The fixation and fear of one man only underscores the weakness and

rot at the heart of the system that Putin has built.

And today at the White House, you saw the President of the United States

responding to that, with the largest single package of sanctions against Russia since the

invasion of Ukraine, unveiling expansive major new sanctions that, quote, deny Russia the resources

necessary to support its brutal war against Ukraine.

The Treasury Department is quote designating targets including a major cog in Russia's

financial infrastructure more than two dozen third country sanctions evaders in Europe,

East Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East, and hundreds of entities in Russia's military

industrial base and other key sectors.
