Summary

President Trump cruised to victory in the 2024 election largely because voters said they trusted him more on the economy. But 100 days into his second term, that trust has evaporated. Consumer confidence in April plummeted to levels not seen since around the start of the pandemic. And amid rumors that Amazon would add the cost of tariffs to each item on its website, the White House went into full-court press mode to knock them down. Gee.. we wonder why? Stephanie Ruhle, host of MSNBC's ‘The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle’ and a senior business analyst for NBC News, helps us make sense of Trump’s economic lurching. And in headlines: Canada’s Liberal Party rides national hatred of Trump to an election victory, the president celebrates his first 100 days in office by celebrating himself in Michigan, and the Justice Department sees a mass exodus of civil rights attorneys.

It's Wednesday, April 30th. I'm Erin Ryan, in for Jane Koston, and this is What a Day,

0:07.5

the show that thinks that the kid that scratched up the 50 million euro Rothko painting at a museum

0:12.5

actually created more interesting art than the original Rothko. Art as resistance, art as irreverence,

0:18.3

art as a rejection of protocol. Give that kid a genius grant.

0:28.2

On today's show, Canada's Liberal Party rides national hatred of President Donald Trump

0:33.6

to an election victory. And Trump holds a 100-day rally celebrating himself in Michigan,

0:39.6

a state so close to Canada that if he stays really quiet, he can probably hear raucous Canadian

0:45.7

booze directed his way from Ontario. But first, President Trump cruised to victory in the 2024

0:51.7

election in large part because voters said they trusted him

0:55.2

more on the economy. Now, I've got my own theories about what I believe the economy was code for

1:00.7

among voters who simply couldn't bring themselves to trust Kamala Harris. But now that we're a few

1:05.8

months into Trump's second term, voters are across the board less than enthusiastic on the job Trump has done.

1:12.8

We're seeing this in the polling. Trump is underwater overall, but also across several polls,

1:17.5

a majority of Americans are giving the president a thumbs-down fart sound on his signature issue.

1:22.6

People are feeling it. Consumer confidence plunged this month to levels not seen since the start of the pandemic.

1:28.3

And that leaves businesses in a tough spot. Enter Amazon. This morning, rumors circulated that the

1:34.1

company would start listing the cost of tariffs on each item on its website. Since many of the

1:39.5

things on Amazon are not made in the U.S., this meant that most products on Amazon would show the real price

1:45.2

plus the tariff cost as two separate numbers. Now, this would be a nightmare scenario for the Trump

1:51.2

administration because the way they've tried to sell tariffs to the American people is by claiming

1:56.1

that consumers wouldn't be paying them, foreign governments would. And so Trump freaked out and got on the phone with Jeff Bezos.

2:03.0

The end result of this fracas was that Amazon said the whole tariff price thing was never the plan.
