Summary

A New York judge ruled last week that Donald Trump must pay over $350 million in penalties for business fraud and banned him from running companies in the state for three years. Ravi explains where the case went wrong, from New York Attorney General Tish James’s motives in bringing the case to issues with the judgment itself. Is the end of the Hunter Biden scandal near? Ravi takes a closer look at the recent arrest of the FBI informant who sparked the Biden impeachment probe and the related bribery allegations against the President’s son. The now-ex-informant faces accusations of lying to the FBI and having ties to Russia. In education news, Yale has reversed its decision to make standardized tests optional for college admissions. Will more colleges follow suit? Ravi then turns to high school admissions and unpacks the Supreme Court’s recent decision to reject an affirmative action case regarding a renowned Northern Virginia magnet school, effectively allowing the school’s current admissions policy to stand. Welcome to The Lost Debate Show for Politically Ecclectics. I'm Ravi Gupta, and today we begin with a mixture of history and literature.

0:08.2

So let's take it back to the 16th century, England, to Robert Bolt's brilliant play, a man for all seasons.

0:15.1

And at the center of that story is Sir Thomas Moore, who is a man of unwavering principles.

0:20.4

And in a pivotal exchange, Moore finds

0:23.3

himself in a heated debate with William Roper, who's his idealistic son-in-law. And they're

0:28.6

debating whether to bend the rules to go after evil. And Moore would not bend the rules. But his

0:36.5

son-in-law, William, felt differently. He said,

0:39.3

so now you give the devil the benefit of the law, sir. Thomas Moore said, yes, what would you do?

0:45.4

Cut a great road to the law to get after the devil? William Roper said, yes, I cut down every

0:50.6

law in England to do that. And Sir Thomas Moore said, oh, and when the last law was down

0:55.9

and the devil turned round on you, where would you hide, Roper? The law's all being flat. If you cut

1:01.9

down and if you're just the man to do it, do you think you really could stand upright in the winds

1:06.7

that would blow then? I think about this story because in New York last week, Judge Arthur Orgeron ordered Trump

1:15.4

to pay more than $350 million in a civil fraud judgment for inflating the value of his real estate

1:21.4

holdings.

1:22.4

And the case was brought by Attorney General Lettisha James.

1:26.7

And this is one of these moments where we really need to

1:28.9

think straight and think about, are we really applying the law equally? And I wrote about this two

1:36.2

years ago. And I had issues with James from the get-go on this case, because when she was running

1:41.8

for Attorney General in 2018, she gave an interview in which she said, quote, the President of the United States has to worry about three

1:47.8

things.

1:48.8

Mueller, Cohen, and Tish James were all closing in on him.
