Summary

Donald Trump has been losing like crazy. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed. The Supreme Court struck down his tariffs and his birthright citizenship arguments tanked. He's losing the redistricting wars. And the Justice Department dropped its prosecution of Fed chair (and Trump nemesis) Jerome Powell amid cringeworthy circumstances. The latter is humiliating: DOJ insiders are now leaking that they’re really ramping up the prosecution of his enemies now, by golly! But those prosecutions will likely keep failing—as they already have—and all this reveals is desperation to show MAGA that this appalling corruption will ultimately bear fruit. White House spin on this is embarrassingly geared towards lifting the ailing despot’s spirits. We talked to Zeteo reporter Asawin Suebsaeng. We discuss why MAGA-world can’t permit any acknowledgement of Trumpian fallibility, why Trump’s authoritarianism and incompetence go hand in hand, and why Republicans will pay an electoral price for helping sustain the cult of Trump.  Looking for More from the DSR Network? Donald Trump has been losing on a lot of fronts lately.

0:32.7

The strait of Hormuz remains closed.

0:35.2

His attack on the Fed chair failed.

0:40.6

The Supreme Court struck down his tariffs and will probably rule against him on birthright citizenship.

0:42.0

He failed to prevent Virginia from passing a referendum adding House seats for Democrats.

0:47.3

And that's only a partial list.

For the MAGA base, however, the illusion must always be sustained that Trump is in total mastery of events and forever has his enemies on the run.

0:59.0

So his team is now leaking word that he's going to seriously ramp up the prosecutions of enemies.

1:05.0

And in one case, his press secretary tried hard to placate the audience of one in an amusing way. Asu and Sub-Sang,

1:13.3

senior political correspondent at Zateo, has been writing well about how the cult of Trump

1:18.6

prohibits any truth-telling about all this losing. So we're talking to him about all of it today.

1:24.2

Swen, always good to have you on. Thank you so much for having me back. Well, let's start

1:29.4

with the first big one. Trump's Justice Department has dropped its effort to prosecute Federal Reserve

1:34.8

Chairman Jerome Powell for supposedly lying to Congress about a renovation of Fed headquarters.

1:40.8

This thing was always a joke. One federal judge blasted it as an effort to harass Powell

1:46.1

primarily over Trump's hatred of him. And the New York Times reports that prosecutors admitted

1:51.7

that they didn't have evidence of any crimes by Powell, but wanted to press forward anyway.

1:57.0

Swin, that's not how this is supposed to work, is it? Okay, something that really pisses me off about this stuff is if you go down the roster of the names that are publicly available of the lawyers at DOJ who are conducting this, these are not always people who used to be on Donald Trump's personal legal team.

2:13.8

There are a good number of them who have been there for a while throughout multiple administrations, not just this one.

2:22.1

So these hugely corrupt authoritarian efforts are not just defined by the pure-blooded teen Trump individuals.
