Welcome to Home of the Brave. I'm Scott Carrier. Earlier this week, before the Indiana primaries on Tuesday, I flew to South Bend, Indiana

to see both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders speak.

Sanders on Sunday, Trump on Monday, both in the same building,

the conference center downtown

beside the St Joseph River.

I wanted to compare the events,

not so much the candidates, but their supporters, the whole thing,

what it's like to be there.

Sanders spoke first on Sunday, but I'm going to start now with the Trump event on Monday night

because something happened there that should have been reported and wasn't. Or in my

mind it was a big deal.

Somewhere around 5 to 6,000 people showed up for Trump,

more than could fit into the big auditorium where he was going to speak.

So they funneled the overflow crowd into a theater that had audio, but no video from what was happening across the hall.

I ended up in there with about a thousand people,

almost all white, middle class, mid-westerners,

many of whom figured out how to watch the live YouTube feed on their cell

phones.

Both the Sanders and Trump campaigns play music before their speeches start.

Sanders plays Joan Arma Trading and David Bowie.

Trump plays the Rolling Stones and Elton John, but just a few songs over and over again. So I turned off my recorder

to save the battery, and then, just as I did, a woman started praying.
