Welcome to News Hour from the BBC World Service, coming to live with Tim Franks in London and me, James Kimmer-Assami in Milwaukee.

We are coming to you today from Solly's Grill. It's a popular haunt in the biggest city in the Midwestern state of Wisconsin, one of the seven or so states likely to decide tomorrow's

U.S. presidential election. Solly's speciality is that gooey Wisconsin delicacy, if that's the right

word, the butter burger in front of me orders for it coming in thick, very thick and fast.

Now both Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris have been to Milwaukee in recent days,

although they have sent their running mates to Wisconsin for the final dash at the end of this extraordinary campaign,

and one in which more than 78 million Americans have already cast early votes.

Fear and loathing on the campaign trail by Hunter S. Thompson, That classic of US election reportage is now more than 50 years old,

but its title feels pretty apt this year.

There is plenty of fear and no small amount of loathing in the atmosphere

during the final hours before polling stations open.

We'll have more from Wisconsin later on in the programme.

First though, let's hear about

the final hours of campaigning in other swing states. At a rally in Reading, Pennsylvania,

Donald Trump attacked his opponent, Kamala Harris, accusing her of the most egregious betrayal of

the American people by any leader in history. She's violated her oath of office.

She's eradicated our sovereign border and unleashed an army of gangs and criminal migrants from prisons and jails,

insane asylums and mental institutions, from all around the world from Venezuela and the Congo in Africa, stealing countless American lives.

And these are rough, these are rough customers that are coming.

Well, immigration is an issue that plays very well with voters on the Republican side in particular.

We'll have more about that later in the program.
