Truman's political life was on the edge.

The machine that had built his career, as we said, the Pendergast organization, was gone.

Tom Pendergast, the boss, had once called Truman, my boy, Harry.

That doesn't mean that Harry Truman agreed with him all the time. But he had gone to prison for

income tax evasion in 1938, and anything associated with him was now somewhat toxic in the state of Missouri.

Lloyd Stark was the reformist governor who had once quietly sought Pandergast's backing, and now he positioned himself as a corruption

fighter. And that Stark would replace Harry Truman for the Senate spot in Missouri.
