And Paul and Barnabas continued at Antioch, teaching and preaching, with many others the Word

of the Lord. And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, let us return and visit our brethren

in all the cities wherein we have preached the Word of the Lord to see how they do. And Barnabas

would have taken with them John also, that was surnamed Mark, but Paul desired that he, as having departed from them out of Pamphelia, and not gone with them to the work, might not be received.

And there arose a dissension so that they departed one from another, and Barnabas indeed taking Mark sailed to Cyprus.

Hello my friends and welcome to true heroes. Today is Corpus Christi, but we are going to look at the life of St. Barnabas

whose feast would be today if it weren't for Corpus Christi, which is actually still a very fitting occurrence, that we should

consider the life of one who was so close to the body of Christ. Let us begin his story.

Barnabas, a Jew of Cyprus and named Joseph, sold his property, gave the proceeds to the apostles,

who gave him the name Barnabas, which means son of encouragement, and lived in common

with the earliest converse to Christianity in Jerusalem.

He comes as close as anyone outside the 12 apostles to be

a full-fledged apostle. He persuaded the community there to accept Paul as a disciple, was sent

to Antioch, Syria, to look into the community there and brought Paul there from Tarsus.

When a Christian community developed at Antioch, Barnabas was sent as the official representative

of the Church of Jerusalem to incorporate them into the fold.

He and Paul instructed in Antioch for a year, after which they took relief contributions

to Jerusalem, which was

going through a famine at the time, and returned to Antioch with John Mark, his cousin. Later, St. Mark
