I'm really looking for some kind of unconventional weapon, maybe even to use against the police.

Welcome to True Crime to Go, a true crime story in 10 minutes or less. I am John here with Jamie who is mad at the police. What's up with that?

0:43.0

I'm just excited about this story. I stumbled upon it and it is super unique and fairly lighthearted and we don't get to do that very often, so I'm pumped.

0:54.0

Well, we're glad you guys are here with us with that being said, Jamie, why don't you get the ball rolling?

0:59.0

Just like a little over a month ago, October 12th, 2022, local authorities set out to serve an eviction notice to a home in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.

1:10.0

If somebody's not paying their rent, they got to get evicted.

1:13.0

God get evicted. When they arrived, they saw something unexpected. There was a group of protesters there to prevent what they called a wrongful eviction.

1:22.0

Now, this was organized by an actual organization called the Massachusetts Alliance against predatory lending.

1:32.0

And they believe that the owner of this place, Alton King, had evidence of a bankruptcy stay that should have put the eviction process on hold.

1:41.0

Have you ever heard of an activist group against predatory lending?

1:48.0

No, not at all. I live a very, very boring life. I've never heard of anything like the lending market in general is fairly predatory.

1:56.0

The interest rates are a lot higher than they should be across the board, but I've never heard of a group assembling to protest essentially against interest rates and then holding people accountable to the things that they signed up for. It's odd to me.

2:11.0

Yeah. So the officers are met by several protesters, but one in particular had a unique method for keeping the officers from performing their duty.

2:20.0

Rory S. Woods, 55 years old, had arrived to the protest in an SUV towing a trailer. She had actually come from Hadley, which is about a half hour or so drive.

2:32.0

And it wasn't the SUV or the trailer that stood out to them as much as her outfit. Woods was wearing a beekeeping suit when police approached the home.

2:44.0

Why on earth would somebody be wearing a beekeeping suit at a protest? I can only think of one reason. Well, two, one you're insane or two, there are bees.

2:53.0

I think those could overlap a little bit. I think the Venn diagram of those go together. So authorities report that as they approached the residents, Woods started shaking the beehives that were on the back of the trailer.

3:07.0

She then broke the cover off of one, which led out hundreds of bees that then swarmed the officers.

3:15.0

Several officers were stung by bees in the process of putting handcuffs on Woods. And some of the officers were actually allergic to bees. And when they said as much, they accused Woods of responding by saying, oh, you're allergic? Good.

3:32.0

A few officers did have to go to the hospital, but thankfully, everybody was ultimately fine.

3:39.0

Now Woods faces multiple assault and battery charges for causing the bees to sting the officers. And at her arrangement, she played not guilty. That was just last month. So now she's, you know, awaiting trial.

3:51.0

I mean, like, how does this work? Like, does for each bee thing, is that a charge? Like, or is it just you get one charge for every officer that was involved?
