Today, Ridley Scott's new film The Last Jewel hits UK cinemas.

Set in 14th century France, the film dramatises a real case of trial by combat.

But what exactly was trial by combat? When was it used and what were the rules? Medievalist Professor Hannah Skoda joined me to explain all. But please be aware,

this conversation does include some fairly grisly details of medieval combat. So thank you so much

for joining me to speak all about trial by combat in the

medieval era. So part of the reason that we're having this conversation today is because there's a

new film coming out called The Last Jewel. And that movie is based on a book, but a book is

inspired by a real French case from 1386. So we'll save any spoilers until right at the end of the podcast.
