Our country really seems to be at something of a tipping

point. I do not say that lightly. We have been through tough times for certain as a country, but something still seems different about where we are right now.

I was not around for the Civil War, or the World Wars, and I was just a kid during the 1960s and I don't remember any of that decade.

So maybe disquiet and upheaval is cyclical, maybe it comes around periodically and this time seems more acute because it is our time.

Maybe. Or maybe it feels this way because 2020 has been such a difficult year for our country,

from impeachment to the pandemic,

which many of us are still in the throes of,

to the protest still burning around the country

and what precipitated those protests and we are once again

on the doorstep of a presidential election. Maybe it's just been an unusually

difficult year for America.

Maybe. Or maybe democracies just don't last.

Maybe there is a reason other attempts that self-governance have failed.

Maybe what is required for a republic to withstand human nature is more than we are willing to do.
