Summary
Imagine being in a band with your best friends for over 40 years, and each night you step on stage you get to play one more show. That’s exactly what guitarist Trey Anastasio and his bandmates in Phish think about right before every sold-out arena or amphitheater show. “We're all hyper aware now, every night,” mentions Anastasio. “I mean, we just love it so much. It's like, I can't wait for the tour to start.” Anastasio’s energy and passion is infectious, even when he isn’t talking about music. Bring up hockey, 6L6-based amps, or even his generationally deep Iowa roots and watch as his eyebrows raise.
We had to do something special for the 100th episode of Wong Notes. We caught up with Trey while he was preparing for a November tour with his solo band. In part one, Cory Wong brings Anastasio in with some hockey talk before diving straight into his current full-circle journey with his rig, and he reveals a bit of an epiphany that all true gearheads know, but sometimes are afraid to admit.

| 0:00.0 | What's happening? Welcome to Wong Notes podcast. I'm your host Corey Wong. Guess what? It's the 100th episode today. Yep, we're celebrating here. We are celebrating. And by we, I mean me in my studio alone right now. That sounds more depressing than it is. No, I'm just working on a new record, so I'm deep |
| 0:22.8 | in the zone here. But it's the 100th episode. So I'm celebrating. I'm having a good time. |
| 0:28.7 | Honestly, it's insane to me that this is the 100th episode. I've been doing this for five years |
| 0:33.6 | or something like that now, and I still feel like just yesterday, I interviewed Joe Satriani |
| 0:39.2 | for my first episode. That sounds so cliche. It feels like just yesterday, but it honestly does. |
| 0:46.1 | It does. Time has flown by. But it's been incredible. I've learned a lot from a lot of the people that I've got to interview, |
| 0:56.6 | but also in a lot of ways, I've just, there was a lot of artists that reinforced what many |
| 1:03.6 | of us are already kind of in tune with somewhere deep down inside to begin with, but it's nice over and over and over again. |
| 1:14.6 | Basically, every one of these hundred interviews, a resounding piece of advice that people give |
| 1:21.2 | is to do something compelling that feels uniquely you and that feels like making true art, |
| 1:27.2 | something that brings you fulfillment |
| 1:28.5 | deep in your soul rather than just like playing fast and playing technical or like chasing fame or |
| 1:37.2 | money i think anybody that i've interviewed every one of them has had the sentiment of oh yeah you just |
| 1:43.7 | have to have something that stands out as uniquely you. |
| 1:47.0 | Like, that's how you cut through the noise. |
| 1:49.0 | And a lot of people have said, you know, like, I never want to watch just some guy playing really fast. |
| 1:55.0 | Or I'm like, ah, actually, I do. |
| 1:59.0 | Once. |
| 2:00.0 | And then it's just like, cool. |
| 2:02.2 | That was fun to see that person do that thing. |
| 2:04.8 | But it didn't really move me. |
| 2:07.2 | It didn't feel like art. |
