This happened about 20 years ago when I was a junior in high school in Southern Louisiana.

At this time, a few friends and I would go out canoeing on the weekends.

One of our friends lived right next to a local river, and we would park a car at a landing

several miles downstream from his property, and then drive back to his house and canoe

back down to the landing.

It would usually take us a few hours because we would take our time, take breaks to swim

or stop and eat on the riverbank beaches along the way.

On this day in particular, there were four of us, all males, 16 to 17 years old.
