Summary

Considering that this original film wasn't a gigantic hit at the box office, you might be surprised to learn that the Tremors franchise is now six films deep (with a seventh on the way). Like the Graboids themselves, this shockingly long-running series has operated mostly underground - it was one of the first major properties to take full advantage of sequels designed specifically for the burgeoning direct-to-video market and as a result, it's been quietly serving a fairly fervent fan base ever since.

So on this episode, we're going back to where it all started just in time for Tremors' 30th anniversary. The horror/comedy hybrid is a notoriously tough nut to crack and this one walks that line better than most. We knew there was a lot of love for this movie, but we were still pretty blown away by just how competently crafted it was.

Topics include: how the premise is basically a series of inversions of traditional horror movie tropes, why Tremors 2 made us remember Burt being a bigger part of this one than he actually is, the unusual problem with the original Graboid design, the interesting way the next two films in the series expand on the life cycle of these creatures, our nostalgia for terrible straight-to-video sequels, and much more!

Hey, do you remember tremors?

0:07.0

Hello and welcome, Hey, do you, a show where we reminisce about a movie or TV series we grew up with, then take off the rose tinted glasses to see how it holds up.

0:31.9

I'm Chris. I'm Donna. And I'm Carlos. And today we're revisiting Tremors.

0:53.1

Yeah. And I'm Carlos. And today we're revisiting tremors. Did you know there are six Tremors movies?

0:56.8

I do now.

0:57.8

Holy shit.

0:59.2

With a seventh on the way.

1:01.1

Oh, boy.

1:02.1

And a TV series.

1:03.8

Not the one from a couple years ago with Kevin Bacon that they shot a pilot for,

1:08.0

but it didn't get picked up.

1:09.0

I mean an actual TV series from like

1:11.8

2003 that ran for 13 episodes. And since the first three movies explore the life cycle of

1:19.0

grabboids, which is a neat idea, I think, that what we see in this original film is just

1:23.8

the first stage of their development. That's actually a great bit of retconning for the sake of expanding all of this.

1:30.4

But I like that there's a parallel between the life cycle of the grabboids and the

1:34.4

life cycle of this franchise, which also had to figure out how to evolve and which

1:40.3

remains as shockingly unkillable.

1:43.9

Because the fact of the matter is this original film

1:46.7

did not do that well. It wasn't a hit until home video. That's where it really started to take

1:51.7

off. And I think even though the studio might have very briefly flirted with the idea of producing

1:57.9

a theatrically released sequel. Kevin Bacon passed on it.
