What's up everyone? Welcome back to the Epic Gardening Podcast. Today we're going to take a question again for my friend Isaac who sent me so many good questions that I might as well just call it Isaac Week on the podcast, but it's about square foot gardening and this is

something that I have a lot of experience with because back in my formative days

of gardening if you want to call them that I used to work under Mel Bartholomew so if you want to call them that, I used to work under Mel Bartholomew.

So if you don't know, Mel Bartholomew is the author of Squarefoot Gardening,

which I believe is the best-selling gardening book of all time,

which is a tall order, because I used to work in publishing and selling any book is hard to do.

Selling even 10,000 copies of a book is difficult to do and I believe that they sold something like two or three million copies of square foot gardening.

So clearly it touched a nerve and that's because it's a beautiful method for growing plants.

But here's the question.

How do you think about trellising in a square foot garden?

Because one of the big benefits of growing in a square foot garden is that you are

making optimal use of space. You are planting much closer than you would if you

were doing a standard row or raised bed. And with that planting comes a bit of sacrifice, right? So plants are so close together, they're going to need

a little support sometimes depending on what you're growing. So let's talk about a couple

different trellising methods to grow vertically and really get the most out of your

square foot garden. And so obviously a vertical trellis is going to be one of the best ways to do this, right? So if you're growing peas, if you're growing

tomatoes, a trellis that sort of fits to one side of your square foot garden is a fantastic technique. Now here is the interesting thing.

I'll talk about the construction of that trellis but first of all let's talk about the

placement and so what you need to think about is where in your square foot garden are you going to be growing

the plants that need a trellis because a trellis obviously grows upwards, right?

And so if it's growing upwards, well, it's now becoming an obstacle or a shade creator, right, to other parts of your garden.
