Summary

The family of Abraham is chosen by God. But despite God’s promises to them, they continually act out of greed, division, fear, deception, and lack of trust in Yahweh. How does God respond to this? 0:00.0	One of the first stories in the Bible is of Adam and Eve at the tree of knowing good and bad.
0:10.5	And God says, do not touch it, or you will surely die.
0:14.5	Eve is tempted by a snake to desire the fruit of this tree and she takes it.
0:20.0	Now keep in mind this story and those details when we read another story about Abraham
0:26.8	meeting King of Bimlek.
0:29.0	In this story Abraham starts telling everyone that his wife is his sister.
0:33.6	And so King of Bimlek takes her.
0:36.2	What's interesting is God appears to this king in a dream.
0:40.1	It says, hey, this guy lied to you and don't touch that woman or else you will surely
0:45.8	die.
0:46.8	Abraham's wife is the tree that is not to be touched or eaten from, less to die.
0:51.6	This king becomes the Adam figure and Abraham plays the role of the snake, the lying
0:56.6	treacherous snake in the story.
0:58.4	Today on the podcast we are in the second movement of the Genesis scroll.
1:02.7	These are the stories of Abraham.
1:04.6	And in this movement we're tracing the theme of trees.
1:07.4	In Hebrew it's the word eights.
1:09.6	Eights can refer to any wooded object, a tree, a bush, or log.
1:13.4	And when we see eights, we sometimes find moments of temptation.
1:17.2	But we also find moments of deliverance.
1:20.2	Like when Hagar is wandering in the wilderness with her son about to die and she puts her
1:24.8	son under an eights.
