When a group of researchers looked at 1800 patients to see which condition was most strongly associated with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), they were surprised to find hypothyroidism at the top of the list. A number of other studies over the last few years have pointed to a significant connection between bacterial overgrowths in the gut and thyroid health. Most importantly (and shockingly for many), research has now shown that probiotics, which improve gut health, SIBO, inflammation, and absorption of medication, can also help to normalize TSH levels, improve persistent hypothyroid symptoms like fatigue, and reduce the need for levothyroxine and other thyroid meds. Watch this quick video to learn more about the SIBO-thyroid connection and how you can use this information to improve your health.

0:00.0 | Hi, this is Dr. Rucho, and let's discuss the Cibothiroid connection. |
0:04.1 | This story really begins in 2017. |
0:07.1 | When a group of researchers were trying to better understand what conditions are most |
0:12.2 | tightly associated as Cbo or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. |
0:16.8 | So they examined about 1,800 patients, and they were surprised to see that hypothyroidism |
0:23.9 | was actually the condition most highly associated with small intestinal bacterial |
0:28.9 | overgrowth. |
0:29.4 | They were expecting that some type of intestinal surgery or perhaps use of acid lowering |
0:35.6 | medications would be what underlined or what most closely |
0:39.9 | associated to CBO. |
0:42.0 | But in fact, it was hypothyroidism. |
0:43.8 | It's a very unexpected finding. |
0:46.9 | And this kind of sets the stage for a finding from a year later, 2018, a group of pollist researchers were looking at CBO patients, |
0:57.6 | and they found that CBO patients had a higher likelihood of thyroid autoimmunity than did |
1:04.8 | healthy controls. And remember that thyroid autoimmunity is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. |
1:12.8 | And then one year later, really the most seminal finding here, a group of researchers wanted |
1:18.9 | to better understand why do some patients who are on thyroid medication still have fatigue |
1:25.6 | and have an inability to stabilize their TSA-levels. |
1:30.0 | So they took a group of 16 individuals who are being treated with thyroid hormone as |
1:34.9 | lebo-thyroxin and still had fatigue and were still struggling with dialing in their dose. |
1:41.0 | And they gave 30 of them probiotics, and the other 30 they gave a placebo, so as to |
1:45.9 | ensure any findings from this study would not be from the placebo effect. And the results |
