Founded in 1610 by Archbishop Richard Bancroft,

Lambeth Palace Library. The historic library of the Archbishop's of Canterbury is one of the

oldest public libraries in England and the principal record repository of the Church of England.

The manuscripts in its collection date back as early as the 9th century.

And in part because it started with Bancroft's own outstanding personal library of printed books

and manuscripts, there are some particularly illuminating and illuminated treasures from the early

modern period. We are going to scratch the surface today and look at just a few special items

among them are some books and manuscripts I did not know existed and that have changed my view

Charles has had a major role in the creation of a new purpose-built building for the library,

which is now offering its first public events and exhibitions. The first of those is called

joining Lambeth Palace Library, Charles spent 15 years as a curator of British collections,
