Summary

In this episode, Travis McMacken joins the fun as we explore the life and theology of Karl Barth, the original crisis theologian. In this insightful conversation, we dive into Barth's theological perspective, his reaction to World War I, and his thoughts on the incarnation and revelation. The discussion covers how Barth's theology evolved, his views on the role of the church in times of crisis, and the contemporary relevance of his ideas. This DECEMBER, we will be exploring the 'Theologians of Crisis' in our online Advent class - Breaking into the Broken World. Join us to learn about Karl Barth, Paul Tillich, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Rudolph Bultmann as we explore their thoughts and timely reflections in their Advent/Christmas sermons. 0:18.9

hear. That's what I like to hear. So this is the first

0:22.7

of live streams over Advent looking at different theologians of crisis. And today, we got the OG

0:30.1

crisis theologian, Carl Bart, on the docket. Before we jump in to talking about Carl,

0:35.5

I just want to let you all know, Travis recorded an amazing lecture introducing Carl Bart, some of his Advent and Christmas theology,

0:43.6

and reflecting on one of his Christmas sermons that everyone in the class is already received.

0:49.9

If you're sitting there and you're going, whoa, this sounds like fun.

0:53.0

I want to read this.

0:53.8

I want to go along with it. I want to get the lecture. Then go to, oh're going, whoa, this sounds like fun. I want to read this. I want to go

0:54.2

along with it. I want to get the lecture. Then go to, oh, God, what now? You know, sadly, Travis,

1:00.1

I got that URL for the 20th anniversary of 9-11 that I thought, you know, theology changed after

1:07.2

that rather dramatically, and we're going to look at how it changed and that

1:11.1

UR was just sitting there.

1:12.5

And then something occurred early in November, right, at the, that I thought, man, I guess I

1:19.5

should do something for Advent that's like raising the kind of questions that one of the perks

1:23.9

of talking to thousands of ministers regularly is you get their emails of their concerns. And they're like, oh, God, what now? What is even the, what am I supposed to do as a,

1:34.7

as a proclaimer of the gospel at a time where things are in tumult? That you could say, there's a

1:40.3

series of interlocking crises going on. And I was like, for sure. I was like, guess what?

1:45.7

There was a whole group of theologians that started raising these questions in the crisis in Europe

1:51.0

after World War I, and there were theologians of crisis. So boom, that's what we did. Each week,

1:55.9

there's a different one. Today we're talking about Carl Bart next week, Dietrich Bonhofer, and then Paul Tillick, and then Rudolph Boltman. And so that's going to be going down. Everyone, you're invited. Oh, God, what now? Dot net. I join up. It's donation-based, including zero. So, yeah, and Linda, the lecture is on the class resource page. Actually, there's a couple of them up there already.
