Summary

A few weeks ago, our staff here at Atlas Obscura put out an episode about our traveling expectations – places that either blew us away… or were a major letdown. And today - we are hearing YOUR stories. WE WANT YOUR STORIES: We’re working on a new slate of episodes that will feature listener stories, and we want to hear yours. Tell us about a place you’ve been that made you instantly feel at home. What made it special? Have you returned there? What sticks out about this place that makes it unique to you? Why does it remind you of home? How does it connect to you? Give us a call at 315-992-7902 and leave a message telling us your name and story. Just so you know, our mailbox will cut you off after two minutes, so you may need to call multiple times if your story is long. You can also record a voice memo and email it to us at [email protected]

Hey everybody a few weeks ago our staff at Alice Obscera put out an episode about

0:07.3

travel expectations the places that either completely blew us away or were a gigantic let-down. Today, we are

0:16.8

going to hear the stories that you told us, like from Carrie, who traveled to

0:21.6

Scotland from the US

0:22.7

to find a castle with a connection to her ancestors,

0:26.1

or from Libby, who made her first trip abroad

0:29.5

and realized at the breakfast table

0:31.4

that she was not in Kansas anymore. I'm Doolan Thuris and this is Atlas

0:36.8

Obschera. More after this. Hi, my name is Carrie Milne Zellman, and I want to tell you about my most disappointing travel experience. When I was going to college in Michigan during

1:07.8

the 1990s I took this class that gave us an international internship experience in Scotland.

1:15.0

And at the end of the internship, my mom joined me for a couple of weeks to tour the highlands.

1:21.0

And our travel plans culminated at this castle that was recorded as a

1:26.2

birthplace of one of our ancestors from over a century ago. So deep in my grandma's family records was the birth of this Daniel McNaughton, who held my

1:39.3

grandmother's maiden name at this Glen Devon Castle of Scotland.

1:44.5

And so my mom and I were super excited to go visit this place

1:49.2

and we didn't really have any more information about it

1:52.2

because this was the time before the internet and we couldn't find anything about it in our travel guides.

2:00.0

We had rented this car and near the end of our trip we used this road map to find this tiny village of Glend-Devin and we really didn't have any other way to find this castle other than to drive around and see if we could find anything promising.

2:16.8

So we passed this small Kirk and a cemetery near this brook and then we found this winding road that was going up a hill on our right

2:25.0

and it was lined with these tall pine trees

2:28.0

and it had this ornate white sign with this black fancy script for Glendevan Castle.

2:34.4

So I was like, oh, this is it.
