Summary

Quicksand isn't something that only happens in movies — it happened to two real men in the past three months, in places that looked completely ordinary. We follow Austin Dirks, an experienced thru-hiker trapped knee-deep in freezing sand in Arches National Park, and Andrew Giddens, who spent days invisible and shoulder-deep in a Florida mud pit before anyone found him. The difference between 2 hours and 6 days comes down to one device.

0:43.8

same texture, same flat stillness. You put your foot down. And it doesn't stop. Your boot

sinks an inch, then two, then three. The ground that looks solid isn't.

0:56.1

And when you try to pull your foot back, something holds it, like the earth itself has decided

1:00.9

it's not done with you. You pull harder. Your other leg goes in. Now you're not thinking about

1:07.2

where you were headed anymore. You're not thinking about the trail or the miles or

1:11.7

the drive home. You're aware of one thing. The ground is pressing in all around you on all sides.

1:19.6

Cold and heavy and completely indifferent. And no matter how hard you pull, you are not moving.

1:25.1

And then, this is the part that breaks people. You stop. You have to. You go still.

1:30.3

You realize that the harder you fight, the deeper you go. So you stand there in the mud,

1:36.4

in the dark if it comes to that, and you wait. And you think, does anyone know where I am?

1:42.1

That is not a movie. That is not a cartoon.
