I can control any function, navigation, communications, engineering directly from the single console

next to my chair.

Adapted for use aboard a starship, this will enable any command-level officers to assume

total control of the craft's functions.

The technology is another step forward into the future.

And yet, more and more, I find myself looking not toward the future, but to the past.

I've just returned from the medical facility at Starbase 21.

I go there as often as my work allows to see my former science officer, Flynn Connor.

I try not to let those visits depress me, because I can't help but contrast the image

of Flynn as he is now, sitting silently by a window, eyes raised to the stars outside.
