Summary

Richard Rohr, in conversation with Paul Swanson and Brie Stoner, continues the journey through the 7 Themes of the Alternative Orthodoxy. The fifth theme of the Alternative Orthodoxy opens the door to everyone: The “separate self” is the major problem, not the shadow self which only takes deeper forms of disguise. There is a subtleness to this theme that takes some sussing out. Join us as we share personal stories that exemplify our wrestling with this theme, distinguish between the ‘shadow self’ and the ‘separate self’, look at the ways that shame snakes its way into our lives, and ultimately how the connection to the whole entices personhood. 0:39.2

Yeah, I really appreciate that certain themes keep coming up.

0:42.1

And one of them is power, control, how we try to control,

0:45.8

how the ego tries to keep us from seeing things we don't want to see in ourselves.

0:50.0

And also, I appreciate how shame has come up a lot.

0:53.3

The role of shame in that it paralyzes us and how unhelpful shame is,

0:58.0

because it actually keeps us from looking at our shadows and seeing things that need to grow

1:04.0

and accepting them as part of our imperfect perfection of being human.

1:08.7

Yeah, that tendency is so toxic.

1:11.0

And then also that threat of forgiveness of not only self and other,

1:14.3

but the necessity of community to hold the mirror so that we can forgive ourselves.

1:18.5

And, and well, also witnessing our shadow self.

1:22.1

Yeah, I feel like the shame component is so strong.

1:26.6

And we many of us have received it within Christianity, especially,
