The concept of gender in Japan is very strict.

You are fixed to one biological gender.

We have to show younger generation. They are not wrong.

Japan has come under fierce criticism for its laws around transgender individuals.

Specifically, the way it stipulates how an individual is allowed to legally change gender. At present the law enacted in 2004 states that

individuals wishing to change gender must fit a long list of criteria.

First you have to be 20 years or older, you cannot be married, you cannot be married you cannot have a minor child and also you have to get the

diagnosis from their psychological doctors that there you are suffering from gender identity disorder.

And then you have to go through serialization operation.

Numerous international bodies, including the United Nations and the World Health

Organization say that these laws violate basic human rights.

Meeting these conditions is an expensive time-consuming and laborous process.

Enforced sterilization means transgender people have their reproductive organs surgically removed

so they can't have children. In 2015, while over 25,000 individuals were set to be transgender in Japan,

only 6,000 of them legally changed gender.

Largely because they refused to comply with every part of Japanese law.
