Summary

As the 2024 awards season comes to a close, Imara reflects on the groundbreaking contributions of trans filmmakers and actors to cinema. First, she sits down with actress Trace Lysette to talk about her role in the critically acclaimed film Monica. Trace explains why self-doubt is a luxury in the entertainment business and how she’s struggled to find work after starring in Monica. Then, Imara is joined by D. Smith, who delves into her pivot from producing music to directing films, the stylistic choices behind her documentary Kokomo City, and what it means to make Black films.

This past Sunday, the Silver Screen's most glamorous stars and filmmakers gathered for the biggest

0:21.2

night in Hollywood. Of course, there was lots of buzz around Lily Gladstone for her performance

0:26.0

in Killers of the Flower Moon. But there were also some really big snubs, like Monica, starring

Trace Lassette, which was denied a well-deserved Oscar nomination despite a grassroots effort to get them into the running.

And there were others which made a big splash at Sundance,

which is normally a precursor of big things to come at the Oscars,

0:47.4

which never even made it to the big screen, like Kokomo City,

0:51.2

which is now on Paramount Plus.

So today I wanted to talk to the people behind

0:56.1

two of these incredible films to talk about all of this complexity. First, I'm joined by the

star of Monica, actress Trace Lassette, who opens up about her struggle to make it in Hollywood.

1:07.8

My biggest challenge has been a lack of access, not about self-doubt.

1:12.9

And I think that's a luxury that a lot of our cis counterparts get to have.

1:18.7

Next, I'll chat with filmmaker D. Smith about the vision behind Kokomo City.

1:23.3

That's what Kokomo City is about.

1:25.8

It's not about sex.

1:27.2

It's about us us as black people.

1:30.6

How do we love each other and support each other?

1:34.3

But first, let's start out as always, with some trans joy. It's no secret that the filmmaking industry is very cis, very white, and very hard to break into.

2:02.7

That's why Joachoucahour founded Comfrey Films.
